In regard to your last Anon; I have a bit of advice. I had a similar experience about 5-yrs ago, I had trouble being at places that had concrete and grass and the smell and texture of rubber triggered me because that's what I associated with the experience. What helped me was going through the motions (the grief/crying/overall freaking out) while telling myself that "it's in the past now" and that "I'm safe now" over and over until the panic attack would dissipate. I hope that may help.

(I'm the anon w the car trigger) I do have a therapist but I haven't told her about that one specific trigger because I know that some people don't think synesthesia is a real thing, or she might think I'm just being a special snowflake. :/ Eh... It is comforting to know that other people have experiences like this though <3

yeah, that’s understandable! a lot of people don’t believe synesthesia exists/think people are making it up. well if she’s helped you with other triggers I guess you could apply the same techniques to this one. or maybe it will gradually get better over time? I’m really not qualified to give advice on this ahaha. but I seriously hope you feel better. that sucks to be triggered by such a commonplace thing.

I have a friend who is a synesthete, and a lot of this stuff makes sense to me. I don't think I'm a synesthete, but the letter-color thing I've always had (words have colors and personas to me as well.) Anyway a year ago I was raped, and the whole time It just sounded like a car rushing by, and now if a car drives by really close to me or is just really loud I can get triggered by it... do any of your other followers have this problem and maybe have any advice to give?

I’m so sorry to hear that that happened to you. it makes sense that that sound would trigger you, but I’m not sure what advice to give. have you seen a therapist about what happened? they might be able to help you desensitize yourself to the sound.

The projector/associator distinction is something researchers have come up with to explain the differences between grapheme-color synesthetes. It probably can’t explain away ALL the variety. There may turn out to be three types of g-c synesthesia, or multiple kinds of projectors and associators.

Basically, to any synesthetes out there who don’t quite fit into the categories: don’t worry about fitting into a box that might not exist! There’s a lot we don’t know about synesthesia, which is part of what makes it cool. :)

Is it possible that I am a projector and an associator at the same time? For example, when I see the number 3 in a book or something it's regular black, but there's sort of a second green layer in my mind's eye which makes it black and green at the same time. It's like I see the number in the colour it's actually written in at the same time I see it in the colour I experience it. Sorry if that was hard to understand.

Sounds to me like you’re a projector! Projectors see the veridical and projected colors simultaneously. (Usually the projected color is more intense though.)

But tbh synesthesia is confusing as hell. Like, I’m literally doing experimental research on projector vs associator synesthetes and I still don’t know which kind I am. The more you learn, the more confusing it gets sometimes, haha. I wouldn’t worry about it if I were you.

My brother and I both have all the same kinds of synesthesia (and we've gone through some lists on various sites and we match up with like twelve of them specifically) and while some of our colors match up with letters/numbers/songs/whatevers they don't always and we get into the weirdest arguments over them sometimes and sound like crazy people to anyone who doesn't know about it. (Especially at thanksgiving dinners with extended family.)

Yup, there’s nothing more aggravating than hearing about associations that seem “wrong” to you! That’s part of why I never go in the synesthesia tag anymore haha

I was reading through the blog and saw a post about not knowing what specifically causes synesthesia, but I've been finding more books about it recently and what actually makes the most sense (what with better brainy tech and things) is that everyone has connectors in the brain for senses, but synesthetes just have more neurons between them, which is why people can have syn. experiences on drugs sometimes that they would't have normally, because it's just enhancing a part of their brains.

Mmmhmmm. Multimodal experiences are universal, they’re just experienced more “literally” for synesthetes. So it makes sense that synesthesia might use the kinds of brain connections that everyone has.

Hiya, I wanna say I love this meme and it's let me know so much more about my synaesthesia. I have a question however for those with more knowledge; I link all numbers and letters with colours, but I only hear colours with certain sounds and it's the same with my sense of touch - is it normal to only have partial synaethesia or am I mistaken? Sorry I've done my researching as best I can.

Thanks! That’s a really good question but unfortunately I don’t have a good answer- the research hasn’t really covered that. I am the same way though: I experience colors from sounds and tactile sensations, but only sometimes. It’s good to know I’m not alone. :) Sorry I couldn’t be more helpful!

IS ANYONE ELSE ABLE TO HEAR ASL??? D: like, based on the way folks are signing, I can hear their vocal intonations, accents, etc. (I am a hearing person learning ASL, not a deaf person)

yup! I have the same type of reaction when people talk about what colors their graphemes are.

Maybe another indication of synesthesia instead of an overactive imagination is the rigid sense of "this is right and everything else is wrong"? For example, if someone were to tell me that 9 is anything other than a cranky old man I would feel almost affronted. It'd be like saying 2+2=5. It's just so blatantly, obviously wrong. I don't think I would feel the same way if my OLP were simply an overactive imagination. I have an overactive imagination anyway but it's not rigid and uncompromising.

Hi there! I think I have OLP...but I have no idea. I'd mentioned to a friend that I was always thinking up personalities, genders, and relationships for letters and numbers, and he directed me to the Wikipedia page (I know, not the best place to look at that sort of thing), but I have no clue if I really have OLP, or just an overactive imagination. Is there a way to see for sure? I mean, with other types it seems like it's pretty obvious if you have synesthesia, but for me, I have no clue...

yeah OLP is a tricky one and tbh I know almost nothing about it!

but if you want to be sure…synesthetic experiences are automatic, involuntary, and consistent. so if your experiences happen automatically, without you controlling them, and are consistent over time, then you probably have synesthesia.
